So yesterday I took Amelia to get a second opinion on her bowel situation. The doctor seemed to think that since she is still gaining weight, has a pleasant disposition, and has not run a fever, that her diarrhea is not a concern. BUT she thought we needed to figure out what was going on with her none-the-less. Since I had already taken her off of milk and started her on a probiotic(thanks Jamie!), seemingly beginning to heal Amelia's intestines, the Dr. told me to continue her on soy milk and take a stool sample.
Now, taking a stool sample, I imagine, is as completely disgusting as it sounds. I went home armed with 4 collection containers, and a husband who is out of town on business (of course, just when I have the perfect task for him too!). Amelia hadn't pooped all day. I knew it was coming my way soon and was mine for the taking. I was dreading it, but anticipating the prospect of finding out what was going on in the tummy of this little girl. But then a curious thing happened -Amelia had her first solid poop in a month. I couldn't believe it! I was dumbfounded. At this point my mind flashed to the 4 collection containers. "I have to collect a sample for the lab," I thought. So I put Amelia to bed, took the diaper and marched my way towards the bathroom to fulfill my motherly duties. And as I stood over my post, armed with a plastic fork, trying to decide how to divide this object up in order to fill the containers to the "indicated lines," I caved. I couldn't do it. "It is perfectly normal poop," I thought. "This is not lab worthy." The diaper (and the fork) went into the trash. I decided that the NEXT diaper will go to the lab (if abnormal) and hopefully her Dad would be home to do the deed.
Until them I am basking in the glory of healing my child from motherly insights (not mine really, advice from others) instead of medical advice.
On a side note, the nurse called me this morning from Amelia's regular doctor's office to see how she was doing. Do doctor's offices call each other? Do they know that I went for a second opinion? Or is it just a coincidence? I'm going with the opinion that they were simply being thoughtful in their diligent follow-up on my daughter, but really?! a follow up call?!

I read this post as another teacher came in my room. I was laughing so hard at the thought of you, armed with a fork, trying to decide what to do with the poop. Too funny! Glad whatever seems to be working!
Hmmm... I'll be curious to find out what the verdict is on Amelia's diagnosis. Of course because I'm concerned about Amelia, but also because now MY kid has diarrhea. Thanks!! :)
I am sitting in my office and almost peed my pants laughing at the thought of you doing this. Probiotics and fish oil heal everything according to my naturopath.
